Columbia New Student Newsletter for the Class of 2016

One of Columbia’s most valuable and exciting educational opportunities is found in the active exchange among the students themselves. Everyone brings to campus unique as well as shared voices, knowledge bases, cultures, and beliefs that may be informed by various social identities (e.g. race, religion and spirituality, class, gender identity, ethnicity, sexual orientation, nationality). Acknowledging and discussing these perspectives allow us to better understand the rich experiences that shape the lenses though which we see the world, the people around us, and our life at the University.

To spark this dialogue during NSOP, Under1Roof is a phenomenal way for you to connect with students, hear others’ stories, learn how students have spearheaded social change on campus, and begin to shape the community you want at Columbia. Also, look for other opportunities to connect with each other through the Office of Multicultural Affairs, like the Columbia Mentoring Initiative and the LGBTQ Mixer during NSOP.

We look forward to seeing you in August!

Sincerely,
Melinda A. Aquino
Associate Dean of Multicultural Affairs
